Understanding Special Enrollment Periods for Health Insurance
Typically, health insurance enrollment happens during a specific window each year known as the Open Enrollment Period. However, if you experience certain life changes, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that allows you to sign up or change your coverage for health coverage outside of the usual time frame. Revive Insurance can help you navigate these options and ensure that you're covered when you need it most.

What Is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period is a time outside the yearly Open Enrollment Period when you can sign up for or change your health insurance due to certain life events.

Qualifying events include but not limited to:

  • Marriage or Divorce: Getting married or getting divorced can impact your health insurance needs.

  • Having a Baby or Adopting a Child: The birth or adoption of a child qualifies you for an SEP, allowing you to enroll your child in health coverage.

  • Losing Health Coverage: This could happen if you lose your job-based insurance, age out of a parent’s plan, or lose coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

  • Moving: A change in residence, such as moving to a new zip code or county, can also trigger an SEP.

  • Changes in Income: Changes in household income that affect your ability to qualify for health coverage can allow you to sign up outside the regular enrollment period.

  • Low Income: Individuals or families that have a low income but do not qualify for Medicaid may enroll any time of the year.

If any of these events apply to you, it's important to act quickly. In most cases, you have 60 days from the date of the qualifying event to enroll in a health plan.

How Can You Qualify for a Special Enrollment Period?
Each SEP has specific requirements that must be met in order to enroll. The following links provide additional details about SEP qualifications:
